No iBooks For You, Rest of the World (For Now)

It seems that iBooks will be a US-only service, at least when iPad first lands in stores. Engadget dug up through Apple Australia site, discovering that both the iBookstore and the iBooks app are nowhere to be seen.

Of course, this could be an accidental omission, but Apple’s official PR did say that “iBookstore will be available in the US at launch”, which probably means “US and nowhere else”. It’s tough, but when you remember how long it took Amazon to launch its Kindle internationally, I guess it was to be expected. It does add, however, to the theory that the iPad is the jack of all trades but master of none; when it comes to e-books, it does some things better than Kindle, but it also lags in many aspects.
